Hua Hin takes a big step forward with its new international airport status which is expected to enter into force in 2025. This is an important development for tourism and the economy of the region, with improved opportunities for both travelers and businesses.
Hua Hin Airport is preparing for an exciting upgrade and plans to become an international airport next year, according to Thailand's Ministry of Transport.
On Saturday, Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri announced that the Airports Department and other agencies are working to certify Hua Hin Airport as international. The upgrade aims to meet the increasing number of passengers and make it easier for both domestic and international travel.
Major investment for tourism and economy
The development of the airport is not only good for tourism – it is also expected to provide a positive boost to the local economy. The plan includes two major projects:
- Expansion of the runway
The runway has already been widened to 45 meters to meet international standards and can now accommodate larger aircraft such as Boeing 737 and Airbus A320. This project has cost about 239 million baht and is awaiting final inspection by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT). - New safety areas and road tunnel
The next step is to build safety areas at the runway and a road tunnel. This project has a budget of 300 million baht and is expected to start in January 2025. Construction is expected to be completed in April 2026.
Capacity and future possibilities
Currently, Hua Hin Airport handles approximately 860 passengers per year. The existing terminal, which is also in the process of being expanded, can accommodate 000 passengers per hour. Thai AirAsia already operates the route between Chiang Mai and Hua Hin with flights four days a week.
Once the upgrade is complete, the airport will be able to attract more international airlines, making Hua Hin an even more accessible and attractive destination for travelers from around the world.
