Thailand's jasmine rice exports have received an unexpected boost after new US tariff notices, while Thailand is strengthening its ties with China and Africa in the hunt for new markets.
Thai jasmine rice exports have increased in the spring of 2025, despite global uncertainty surrounding new tariffs from the United States. According to the Department of Foreign Trade, the initial tariff increases have actually accelerated deliveries to American customers, who are looking to secure stocks before additional tariffs take effect.
The goal remains – 7,5 million tons of exports this year.
Despite competition from India, among others, Thailand is sticking to its goal of exporting 7,5 million tons of rice in 2025. In addition to the US, the focus is now on new and growing markets in Africa and China.
“We are actively working to promote the export of white rice and parboiled rice to Africa and China,” a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Trade stated in connection with the agency's 83rd anniversary.
China deal for 280 tons – expected to be completed this year
A major export agreement with China, covering 280 tonnes of Thai rice, is still under negotiation. The goal is to complete it before the end of the year. According to the ministry, the deal is based on good bilateral relations between the countries.
Increased scrutiny of origin marking
At the same time, stricter controls are being introduced on certificates of origin, especially for exports to the US. The number of high-risk products monitored will increase from 49 to 65 product groups. The goal is to prevent products from being incorrectly classified as “Made in Thailand”.
