Chinese tourists are back in Thailand, but growth has slowed following the pandemic. What is behind the trend and what does the future look like for Thailand's tourism?
Despite visa-free travel between Thailand and China, the number of Chinese tourists looks set to remain at roughly the same level as in 2024, around 7–8 million visitors during the next year. Economic challenges in China, such as weak purchasing power and unemployment, are slowing the long-awaited increase in Chinese visitors, according to Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA).
The economy puts sticks in the wheel
Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, president of ATTA, believes that China's economic situation is the biggest challenge. Real estate crises, weak consumption and a lack of support for foreign travel from the Chinese government mean that tourism flows do not reach previous levels.
"It is not easy for Thailand to reach the target of 9 million Chinese tourists by 2025," he explains, pointing to geopolitical concerns as well as China's domestic politics.
Thailand remains a favourite
After all, China is still the largest foreign tourist market for Thailand, with over 6,3 million Chinese visitors this year. But despite more Chinese traveling independently and not via group tours, their spending in the country remains limited.
A chance for a fresh start in 2025
Next year marks The 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between Thailand and China, creating an important opportunity for Thai authorities to attract new groups of Chinese travelers.
"The government should focus on reaching out to lesser-known cities in China and promote visits to less tourist-dense regions in Thailand," concludes Sisdivachr.
Despite the challenges, Thailand retains its strong appeal as a destination for Chinese tourists – but a positive economic turnaround in China is key to achieving future growth.
