Traveler looks at departure screens at airport - uncertainty about Thailand's visa rules

No decision yet on visa change in Thailand – reports Bangkok Post

2025-03-22

Despite several news reports that Thailand is planning to shorten the visa-free stay from 60 to 30 days, no formal decision has been made. The Ministry for Foreign Affairs confirms this in an interview with Bangkok Post March 21, 2025.

According to Nikorndej Balankura, spokesperson for Ministry of Foreign Affairs, no new visa policy has yet come into force and the current rule on 60-day visa-free entry valid until further notice. “Tourists in Thailand are not affected at this time,” he told the Bangkok Post.

Since July 2024, Thailand allows citizens from 93 countries to stay in the country for up to 60 days without a visa, with the option to extend the stay for an additional 30 days. In total, tourists can stay up to 90 days without applying for a visa in advance.

The discussion about shortening the period of stay is underpinned by growing concerns that some foreigners are taking advantage of the generous system to work or operate in Thailand without permission. Several Thai authorities and industry associations have highlighted the problem and urged the government to take action.

Earlier in March, it was reported that the relevant authorities had agreed in principle to proceed with a shortening of the visa-free period. As Thailand Info reported on here: Thailand shortens visa-free stay to 30 days But according to Nikorndej Balankura, it is still a process under review, and nothing has been decided.

“We are trying to find a balance between attracting more tourists and ensuring national security,” he says. He emphasizes that the visa policy is under constant review, and that proposals will first be considered by a visa committee before anything is presented to the government.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs advises anyone concerned about the issue to contact them directly. immigration office or ministry for the latest information.

Thailand Info is closely monitoring developments and will update as soon as new information is confirmed from official sources.
