The Prime Minister visits Phuket - investments in tourism and infrastructure

2025-01-08

Phuket, one of Thailand's most popular tourist destinations, is facing major investments to deal with growing visitor flows and infrastructure challenges. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra recently visited the island to discuss plans for improved tourism, transport and water management.

"Phuket is one of our most important economic engines, and we need to ensure that the infrastructure keeps pace with growth," the Prime Minister said during a visit to Patong.

The government's efforts to manage growing tourism

During the New Year's weekend (28 Dec – 1 Jan) Phuket attracted 230000 tourists, which generated 8 billion baht in revenue. However, the rapid increase in visitors has led to traffic problems and water shortages, two of the biggest challenges for the island.

The traffic in Phuket has become a growing concern, where narrow roads and long queues risk dampening the tourist experience. During the visit, new road projects and digital traffic management systems were discussed to improve the flow of transport.

The water resources is another critical issue. Phuket suffers from both floods and droughts during different parts of the year. The Prime Minister announced that the government will invest in modern water management systems to ensure a stable supply for both residents and tourists.

The luxury sector in focus – Thailand International Boat Show

One of the highlights of the trip was the inauguration of Thailand International Boat Show, one of Asia's leading luxury tourism events. The event, which attracts yacht owners and investors from around the world, showcases Phuket as a premium destination for maritime tourism.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to strengthen Thailand's position as a global leader in luxury tourism,” the Prime Minister commented at the event.

Sustainable tourism and future plans

The government takes a long-term view of Phuket's role in Thailand's tourism industry. The focus is on social responsibility, which includes smart urban planning, environmental protection and support for local businesses in the tourism sector.

“We are building one Smart Phuket, where technology and innovation help us create a better future for tourism,” concluded the Prime Minister.
