On March 7 and 8, 2025, the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) will celebrate its 88th anniversary with a spectacular air show at Wing 6 Royal Thai Air Force Base in Don Mueang, Bangkok. The event will include displays from both Thai fighter jets and international participants, as well as exciting future plans to strengthen the RTAF’s capabilities.

An impressive international lineup

The air show will feature participants from several countries, including China, India, the United States and Singapore. Some of the highlights include:

  • Royal Thai Air Force: Demonstrations with F-16, Gripen and T-50TH fighter aircraft.
  • Kina: August 1 Aerobatic Team will perform advanced flight displays.
  • India: Surya Kiran aerobatic jets participate in the celebrations.

Ongoing negotiations on new Saab Gripen planes

In parallel with the preparations for the air show, negotiations between Saab and Thailand regarding new Gripen E/F fighter aircraft continue:

  • August 2024 announced that it has selected the Saab Gripen E/F as a replacement for its aging F-16A/B fighter jets. This recommendation is still awaiting approval from the Thai government.
  • October 2024 Saab's CEO, Micael Johansson, confirmed that contract negotiations with Thailand have begun to convert the decision into a binding agreement.
  • January 2025 Thailand's Minister of Defense, Phumtham Wechayachai, expressed his support for the Air Force's decision to acquire the Gripen E/F. He emphasized that the purchase will be approved if the price stays within budget and includes technology transfer.
  • February 2025 The RTAF plans to evaluate the ability of its current Gripen aircraft to operate from temporary runways and highways. This aims to test their short take-off and landing capabilities, a critical aspect for operations in environments with limited airspace.

In summary, negotiations between Saab and Thailand are progressing, with ongoing contract discussions and operational testing to ensure that the Gripen E/F meets the RTAF's needs.

Security and future

Air Chief Marshal Phanpakdee Pattanakun, Commander of the Royal Thai Air Force, has emphasized that safety is the top priority for both the air show and future investments. The event not only showcases the history and current strength of the RTAF, but also points to its ambitions for the future.

Practical information

The air show is open to the public, and tickets can be purchased on site or through official channels. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early to get the best seats and avoid queues.

Conclusion
The Royal Thai Air Force's 88th anniversary promises to be a memorable experience for aviation enthusiasts and families alike. At the same time, the ongoing negotiations with Saab mark an important milestone for the RTAF's future development.
