Thailand has taken the initiative for a historic regional tourism initiative that, if it becomes a reality, could change the way travel works throughout Southeast Asia. The project is called Six Countries, One Destination and is based on a shared vision: a Schengen-like visa for several ASEAN countries. But despite strong diplomatic signals and positive reactions, the project's status remains uncertain.
The idea: A single visa for multiple countries
In April 2024, Thailand proposed creating a single visa for six countries: Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar. Travelers would be able to move freely between these countries with a single visa, similar to the Schengen area in Europe.
Since then, the project has evolved into a broader tourism vision with a focus on seamless border crossing, joint festival packages, culinary tours, premium travel and digitally integrated booking systems.
Thailand and Vietnam take the first step
During an ASEAN meeting in Laos in October 2024, Thailand and Vietnam agreed to pilot the initiative. The two countries have since intensified cooperation on marketing, transportation and visa strategies.
Regional support – but no agreements yet
Cambodia has expressed official support for the plan and forwarded it to its government. Malaysia has deepened its cooperation with Thailand, particularly focusing on land borders and improved infrastructure. In April 2025, Thai advisors visited Singapore, whose Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan expressed strong interest. However, Singapore has yet to formally confirm its participation in the project.
Uncertain future despite great ambitions
The goal is to launch the system by the end of 2025, according to several sources. But it is important to understand that there are no binding agreements yet. All the details around visas, border controls and cooperation remain to be resolved.
Experts believe that the biggest obstacle may be differences in legislation, security policy and technical capacity between countries.
