This weekend in Thailand we are seeing a shift from extreme heat to slightly cooler temperatures and improved air quality – especially in southern Thailand. Rain is falling over large parts of the country, which has a positive impact on both temperature and air pollution.
Chiang Rai: From heat to cool with rain on Sunday
Friday: AQI 109 – Unhealthy air, highest temperature 34°C, lowest 23°C
Saturday: AQI 69 – Moderate air, highest temperature 36°C, lowest 21°C
Sunday: AQI 59 – Moderate air, highest temperature 28°C, lowest 20°C
After another Friday of unhealthy levels of air pollution in Chiang Rai, rain is expected over the weekend to help improve air quality, with temperatures dropping significantly by Sunday – a relief after weeks of extreme heat.
Bangkok: Stabilization in both air and temperature
Friday: AQI 75 – Moderate air, highest temperature 32°C, lowest 27°C
Saturday: AQI 70 – Moderate air, highest temperature 34°C, lowest 27°C
Sunday: AQI 75 – Moderate air, highest temperature 35°C, lowest 28°C
Bangkok is experiencing slightly lower temperatures than last weekend, but air quality remains within moderate levels. Rain is expected all day and could contribute to improving air conditions.
Phuket: Rainy weekend with very clean air
Friday: AQI 30 – Very good air, highest temperature 32°C, lowest 24°C
Saturday: AQI 57 – Moderate air, highest temperature 27°C, lowest 25°C
Sunday: AQI 63 – Moderate air, highest temperature 29°C, lowest 27°C
Phuket is once again the best choice this weekend for those wanting to avoid smog and heat. Air quality is very good on Friday and remains at acceptable levels throughout the weekend, partly thanks to persistent rain.
Summary and recommendations
Chiang Rai: Friday will continue to pose a risk to vulnerable groups. Rain on Sunday will bring improvement.
Bangkok: Stable air and rain, but still hot.
Phuket: Excellent air quality – but bring an umbrella.
What does AQI mean?
The AQI (Air Quality Index) shows how healthy or unhealthy the air is. Values above 100 affect sensitive groups, and levels above 150 can be harmful to everyone. The table below shows how to interpret the AQI:
| AQI | Category | Health advice |
|---|---|---|
| 0–33 | very good | Enjoy outdoor activities |
| 34–66 | Bra | Enjoy outdoor activities |
| 67–99 | Moderate | Sensitive people should avoid exertion |
| 100–149 | Bad | Sensitive: avoid activity |
| 150–200 | Very bad | Everyone: avoid exertion |
| 200+ | Dangerous | Avoid all physical activity outdoors. |
