
Thailand completed the group stage of the 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup with a 3–2 victory over Cambodia at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok on 20 December. Already through to the semi-finals, Thailand once again showed why they are favorites to win the championship.
Dramatic goal changes in the first half
The match started dramatically as Cambodia took the lead through Andrés Nieto in the 32nd minute. However, Thailand responded immediately with a goal by Akarapong Pumwisat just a minute later.
Pumwisat and Aukkee secured the win
In the second half, Pumwisat continued his strong play and scored his second goal of the game, giving Thailand the lead. Chalermsak Aukkee secured the win by making it 3-1 in the 84th minute. Cambodia reduced through Abdel Kader Coulibaly in the final minutes, but Thailand held out.
The statistics speak for Thailand's dominance
The statistics show that Thailand dominated the match with 65% possession and 14 shots, compared to Cambodia's 12. In addition, Thailand had a total of 10 corners against Cambodia's 2.
Focus on the semi-finals
With this victory, Thailand consolidates its position as group leader in Group A with a maximum of 12 points. They are now fully focused on the semi-finals, which will be played over two legs on December 27 and 30. The opposition will be between the best teams from Group B, and Thailand coach Masatada Ishii expressed great confidence ahead of the next phase.
"We are ready for the next challenge. The team is in top form, and we will give everything to reach the final,” Ishii said after the match.
