Since January 23, 2025, senior Thai citizens have started receiving 10000 baht in their bank accounts. This measure is part of the government's broader strategy to strengthen household finances and stimulate domestic consumption.
How the support works
The grants are aimed at pensioners and other economically vulnerable groups. To qualify, recipients are required to register their bank accounts through the government system. According to the government's plan, this is only the first phase of the support package, with additional phases expected to be implemented throughout the year.
“This is an important effort to reduce financial stress among the elderly and ensure that they have access to necessary resources,” says the Minister of Finance.
Digital wallet on the way
In the future, the government plans to move to digital payment solutions via a national e-wallet. The goal is to improve the efficiency and security of the support system. Proposals for this were already discussed in December 2024, when Thailand's Constitutional Court approved plans to use digital technology for benefit payments.
Future developments and criticism
Economic analysts have mixed views on the long-term sustainability of the program. While some welcome the support as a necessary aid for the elderly, others have expressed concerns about its impact on the government's debt. The government has promised to evaluate the results of the support and possibly broaden its coverage in the future.
