Thailand is experiencing a huge surge in interest in its new housing initiative for low-income earners. In the first 24 hours after its launch, the registration website received over 30 million visits and more than 150000 applications, marking a major milestone in the government’s strategy to reduce the housing shortage and strengthen social welfare.
Popular areas and conditions
The most sought-after places are Nikhom Rotfai Km 11 in Bangkok and Thonburi Railway Station in the Bangkok Noi district. In addition, the project includes areas in Chiang Rak, Pathum Thani, and Chiang Mai Railway StationThese locations are strategically chosen to offer proximity to public transportation and other important community functions, making them ideal for working Thais with low incomes.
To qualify, applicants must be Thai citizens with a monthly income of no more than 50000 baht and have not previously owned housing. Ownership cannot be transferred within five years of registration, ensuring that the housing reaches those most in need.
Social challenges and future prospects
Critics have pointed out that previous housing projects have sometimes been located in areas with low safety and a lack of public services, but the government has stressed that the new locations have been chosen with both safety and convenience in mind.
This initiative is not only a step towards reducing the housing shortage but also an opportunity to improve the quality of life for low-income earners. The Prime Minister emphasized that the project is part of the government's long-term strategy for social and economic sustainability.
