Thailand is investing in domestic drones to strengthen its defense industry

2025-02-10

The Thai government has decided to develop indigenous drones and military technology to reduce its reliance on imported weapons, part of the country's long-term strategy to strengthen its national defense industry and increase technological independence.

Self-sufficiency in the defense sector

According to the Ministry of Defense, the goal is to create modern and cost-effective UAV systems – (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) that can be used in both military operations and civilian purposes.

The project includes:

  • Development of reconnaissance and combat drones for military operations
  • Collaborations with Thai universities and research institutes for advanced technology
  • Investments in local production to reduce import dependence on foreign defense systems

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has emphasized the importance of increasing Thailand's self-sufficiency in defense technology, especially at a time when global security threats and geopolitical instability are affecting the supply chains for weapons and military equipment.

Expected benefits of the new drone technology

The new investment in domestic drones will contribute to:

  • Improving national security through advanced surveillance and defense systems
  • Reduce import costs and reduce defense spending
  • Stimulate local industry and create more high-tech jobs

The Thai Armed Forces have already tested various prototypes, and according to reports, the development of domestic drones for surveillance and reconnaissance has made significant progress.

International cooperation and export opportunities

To accelerate the development of drone technology, Thailand has also discussed possible collaborations with international defense and technology companies. The country hopes that this initiative will not only strengthen its own security, but also create export opportunities in the defense sector.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the first mass-produced drones could be field-tested in 2026, with full-scale production within five years.

Thailand on the path to a stronger defense industry

With this initiative, Thailand is taking an important step towards becoming less dependent on imported military equipment, while at the same time strengthening its own technological expertise in drone development.

The Thai government has clearly signaled that this is a prioritized part of the country's future defense strategy, and that more initiatives in local defense production and advanced technology may be presented shortly.
