Thailand is launching new initiatives to deal with drug abuse focusing on rehabilitation, psychiatric care and support from local communities. The government prioritizes a people-centred strategy to reduce drug-related problems and improve mental health.
A growing challenge
According to Justice Minister Thawee Sodsong, the increasing drug problems in the country require a holistic approach. Over 600 individuals currently receive mental health care in Thailand, of which approximately 000 are in urgent need of supervision. Of these, 20 individuals have serious psychiatric conditions that require specialized care.
The government has noted that delayed care for drug addicts can lead to mental disorders that pose risks to both the individual and society. Therefore, new programs are being introduced to integrate patients into the care system in a more efficient way.
Innovative rehabilitation programs
The new initiative aims to treat drug addicts as patients rather than criminals. The focus is on providing medical care and psychiatric support that is tailored to the individual's needs. A combination of medical institutions and community-based solutions are used to create sustainable change.
"Our goal is to reduce the risk of recidivism and give individuals the tools to reintegrate into society," said the Minister of Justice during a meeting with representatives from the Narcotics Control Board and the Ministry of Health.
Support from local communities
A new subcommittee has been formed to target 12 priority provinces, including the southern border provinces where drug abuse is particularly prevalent. Local communities and other stakeholders will be involved to develop measures adapted to local needs.
The government also emphasizes the importance of education and awareness campaigns to reduce the demand for drugs and encourage young people to stay away from addiction.
National commitment
To effectively address these challenges, the Ministry of Justice works with the police, health authorities and local organisations. The focus is on strengthening preventive measures, early treatment and rehabilitation to reduce the long-term impact of drug abuse in Thailand.
