
Thailand secured a place in the semi-finals of the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup after defeating Singapore 4–2. Although one group stage match remains, against Cambodia on December 20, the semi-final place is already secured. The semi-finals are played in two meetings on 27 and December 30, but Thailand's opponents are yet to be determined.
Gustavsson impresses with goals - the Swedish duo in focus
One of the highlights of the match was the effort from Thailand's 23-year-old striker Patrick Gustavsson. Gustavsson was noted for a goal in today's match, which further cemented his important role in the team. See the goal here. Patrik Gustavsson, with roots in Sweden, has previously played for Åtvidabergs FF before making his debut for Thailand's senior national team on 10 September 2024 in a match against Vietnam – where he also scored the winning goal.
On weekdays, Gustavsson plays in Muangthong United FC, one of the clubs in Thai League 1, where the team is currently at eighth place in the table.
William Weidersjö, who has a background in both Swedish and Thai football, also took part in today's match for Thailand. The 23-year-old left midfielder has previously represented Swedish clubs such as Nykoping and Hammarby TFF, but now plays for Uthai Thani FC in Thai League 1, which is currently on ninth place.
Focus forward
With the semi-final spot secured, Thailand will be able to play the group stage match against Cambodia without pressure, but with the opportunity to further refine their form ahead of the semi-finals. The matches on December 27 and 30 are expected to be tough as the opposition is likely to be one of the top teams Vietnam or Indonesia from the second group.
