During the 2025 New Year holiday, domestic tourism in Thailand has taken a big step towards reaching pre-pandemic levels. According to the Minister of Transport, the number of domestic travelers increased by about 10% compared to the same period last year, and ticket prices for popular routes such as Bangkok–Chiang Mai and Bangkok–Phuket dropped significantly.
More flights and better prices
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) worked with airlines to increase capacity during the holiday, offering a total of 70000 extra seats, allowing more travelers to plan their trips while keeping ticket prices down.
“This is a clear sign that domestic tourism is recovering. The collaboration between airlines and authorities has improved accessibility and given travelers more options,” the Minister of Transport said in a comment.
Planning for Songkran
With the Songkran festival just around the corner, preparations are already underway to meet the expected surge in travel. CAAT has been tasked with developing long-term solutions to keep ticket prices fair and encourage travelers to book their tickets in advance. It is also working to increase the number of flights to meet demand.
A step towards normalization
The increase in domestic tourism activity is seen as a step towards a full recovery for Thailand’s travel and tourism industry. Airports and tourist destinations are reporting an increased presence of both local and international travelers, boosting confidence in the country’s capacity to handle the return of tourism.
With a successful New Year period behind them, Thailand's transport authorities are looking forward to further improving the experience during the upcoming holidays.
