The White Lotus returns – new season in Thailand promises satire and drama

2024-12-16

The popular HBO series The White Lotus is back for a third season, and the first trailer hints at even more intrigue, satire and dark humor – this time in Thailand. The series, which previously explored the behavior of wealthy Westerners at luxury resorts in Hawaii and Sicily, now takes viewers to the tropical shores of Asia.

Star-studded ensemble and unexpected return

The trailer offers glimpses of actors like Jason Isaacs, Carrie Coon, and Michelle Monaghan, as well as a fond reunion of Natasha Rothwell as masseuse Belinda from the first season. "I'm starting to feel that something good is coming out of this," says Belinda in the trailer - but as usual in The White Lotus nothing will ever go as planned.

A satirical look at spirituality and death

The show's creator, Mike White, previously revealed that the new season will explore Westerners' fascination with Eastern spirituality, spiced with his signature dark humor. “The first season was about money, the second about sex. The third season may focus on death and Eastern religion,” he said in an interview.

Thai landscapes and K-pop stars

The season has been shot in iconic locations such as the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui, Phuket and Bangkok, with support from the Tourism Authority of Thailand. An added surprise is that Blackpink star Lalisa “Lisa” Manobal is making her acting debut in the series as part of the resort staff.

Suspense and death – again

As usual, the trailer hints that the drama at the White Lotus resort will end in tragedy. A body bag looms quickly by – who doesn't survive this time?

The White Lotus has been a huge success since its inception and has won several Emmy awards for its unique mix of social satire and dark humor. The third season looks set to continue in the same vein, with a premiere date expected shortly.

Stay tuned to HBO to accompany you to Thailand's tropical paradise - and its exciting secrets - February 16.
